At The Spa at West Glen, you can now get your dose of Botox — along with a pedicure, stone massage and Hungarian Moor Mud wrap — all in the same place.

The Spa, located at 5465 Mills Civic Parkway, Suite 250, in West Des Moines, expanded its services at the end of April to include a range of medical spa treatments, said medical director Dr. Brenton Koch. They include Botox and Restylane (a "filler" that helps smooth facial wrinkles and folds) injections, microdermabrasion and Intense Pulsed Light treatments (also known as IPL or photofacials), a noninvasive process that helps reduce skin redness and irregular pigmentation.

"The trend in cosmetic rejuvenation of the face, in particular, is less invasive, less downtime, type of procedures," said Koch, who added that more younger professionals and men are seeking out these medical treatments.

Clients couple their Botox treatment with a decadent caviar facial or soothing pedicure, which are just a few of the traditional spa services provided.

Koch said the medical treatments can complement or enhance the day spa or beauty spa services that have gradually rolled out since it opened with manicure and pedicure services in December.

A day at The Spa can run anywhere from $22 for a basic manicure, to $350 to $1,000 per visit for a Botox or Restylane treatment.

"The basis of it all is about feeling better and feeling better about yourself," said Koch, a facial plastic surgeon in private practice with Carithers & Koch Facial Plastic Surgery in Des Moines. "It's the opportunity to do all of it in one place."

Koch's wife, Dr. Heidi Koch, will be administering most of the Botox and Restylane injections at The Spa.

"We just wanted a physician to do the injections," said Heidi Koch, who practiced for six years as a pediatrician before joining her husband in their spa venture. For the last year, Heidi has been training to administer the treatments, practicing on her husband and family members.

Connie Isaacson had a Restylane injection for the first time last week. She'd never had facial treatments, but said she was willing to try something that could help make her appearance reflect her inner youth.

"I thought, you know, why not try something to make my weathered exterior match my younger-feeling interior?" said Isaacson, 59, from Urbandale. "It certainly does lessen the wrinkle."

The Spa's ambience gave a vibe of a location in a larger city, said Isaacson, who is impressed with the Kochs' presence.

"I think that what struck me is the professionalism of the spa and the two physicians there, and the peacefulness of the spa," she said. "A lot of spas are located in salons. That's what makes this one feel different, I think, because there's nobody doing things like haircuts."

The Spa's crew of 24, which includes licensed aestheticians and certified laser technicians, helps staff its nine treatment rooms, two medical rooms, three pedicure stations and three manicure stations, as well as makeup consultations, waxing, airbrush tanning and a host of other services.

You can pad around in a fluffy robe and sit in a cushy, pedicure chair that uses ozone-purified water (which prevents bacteria and fungus growth, Brenton Koch says). The cherry wood furniture and soft lighting in treatment rooms, along with the environmentally friendly cork floors and handmade, recycled paper and Kirei boards (recycled sorghum stalks) decorating the walls give The Spa a relaxing, warm, earthy feel.

The fragrances and products will change from season to season, the Kochs said. Valentine's Day saw a chocolate theme, with chocolate manicures, pedicures and a chocolate chip body scrub. The scents of orange mango aromatherapy currently greet patrons. In the fall, you can expect the aromas of clove and cinnamon, along with treatments like a pumpkin facial peel.

"The varied services are wonderful," said Linda Humiston, who last week had a manicure, pedicure and massage. "You get everything done in one place."

Humiston, 59, from Waukee, said in the past she's had Botox injections done by Dr. Brenton Koch in his office in Des Moines. She said she would consider having the treatment done at West Glen.

"I think it's wonderful that the physician, Heidi (Koch), is here," Humiston said. "You don't normally find that at a spa, where there's an actual physician there."
